The Swing Of Delight was a groundbreaking album for Devadip Carlos Santana. Embracing the future of technology, while utilizing the digital domain in its infancy, this legend delivered one very soulful and spiritual masterpiece.
With a handful of his world class jazz musician friends like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Harvey Mason, Russell Tubbs, plus his Santana band mates, The Swing Of Delight was a crossover hit as loyalists and jazz fans alike flocked to record stores to explore the further musical trek of this superstar artist.
Filled with contributions from Santana himself, Sri Chinmoy and Wayne Shorter, plus a stunning cover of Alex North's Love Theme From "Spartacus", the album highlighted the many guitar styles of Santana as was keenly shown on both the electric and acoustic environments.
Digital was a revolutionary word at the time, and producer David Rubinson successfully captured the artist and his musicians without losing any vitality or over extending the reach of the then new domain. The rich layer of guitar and keyboard play with Herbie Hancock is second to none. Wayne Shorter's role throughout echoes of his epic work with Lee Morgan as well as with Weather Report. The soulful bass of Ron Carter is championed beside these fellow Miles Davis cohorts, as well as the incredible power drumming of the late Tony Williams, all help make The Swing Of Delight the celebrated album it is even three decades after its release.
