The Guess Who
American Woman (180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl)

The Guess Who are one of the few legendary classic rock bands that have stood the test of time for many decades. Their music penned mostly by founders Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings are compositions that are played all over, every hour, every day, thanks to the undying love and support of their fans worldwide.

After a string of non-stop hit singles and chart albums, The Guess Who finally achieved their biggest album yet with the mega classic American Woman. This amazing album captured the music industry by storm and featured several smash #1 singles and solid album tracks, keeping this album in the top of the album charts for over a year.

Side One features the classic title #1 rocker American Woman. For a song originally intended as a jam in the studio, the quartet of Randy Bachman, Burton Cummings, Jim Kale and Gary Peterson soon put the world on its ear with this brash and bold commentary. Quickly rising to the top of the music charts, this tune would set the album up for its success which would go on now for over forty years.

Their next super smash No Time would again make the band more music history as it landed in the top ten and showed the guitar technique of Randy Bachman which would serve as a precursor to the heavy metal sound he would later achieve with Bachman Turner Overdrive. The brilliant vocals of Burton Cummings and the three part harmony from the rest of the band made this musical manna in the summer of 1969.

Radio would serve them another number one as programmers soon found the B-Side of the American Woman 45 equally appealing as No Sugar Tonight would become another significant chapter in this Canadian supergroup's history.

More heavy hitters like When Friends Fall Out and Proper Stranger, the progressive ballad Talisman and the powerful blues shuffle of 969 (The Oldest Man) truly made the American Woman album one of the most important albums of the seventies and has continued to earn accolades into the new millennium with praise from new artists who have gone on to cover a number of tunes from this watershed release.

The packaging is superb as it includes a wonderful 14-page essay and a collection of never seen photos from Bachman's own archives. A true treasury of rare gems for loyal Guess Who fans everywhere!

This Time Long Ago continues their journey from their humble Winnipeg beginnings to becoming the superstar act which is still playing together in 2004! With songs ranging from their second UK chart hit His Girl to unreleased versions of songs from their Wheatfield Soul, Canned Wheat and American Woman albums, these "lost sessions" really cover a lot of musical territory. Check out the newly discovered version of These Eyes with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Burton Cummings vocals are really in exceptional form on this classic track as well as all of the other tunes in this new package. Shakin' All Over/Hey Ho (What You Do To Me)/It's Time

Aside from the magical garage rock classic Shakin' All Over by The Guess Who, the other thirty one gems that make up this wonderful new collection are probably being heard for the very first time by many of their fans. In 1965, when the first rudiments of this superstar act were just beginning to soar into the American and Canadian charts with the smash single Shakin' All Over, three Canadian only released albums would follow over the next few years. Friday Music is proud to be issuing these fantastic three albums on one new compact disc for the first time anywhere for your listening pleasure.

Their debut album Shakin' All Over includes some of the finest musicianship to ever be recorded in their homeland of Canada. Other tracks like I've Been Away and Like I Love You make this first effort a memorable one. A very pleasing half hour of Canadian Rock 60s style that has stood the test of time. Even to this day, The Guess Who still perform the title track in concert.

Hey Ho (What You Do To Me) continues The Guess Who's sojourn with an almost English Invasion approach, which works extremely well on songs like the harmonica laden I Should Have Realized and Randy Bachman's stellar instrumental Made In England. A nicely balanced album with a surprising rendition of Bruce Johnston's five star ballad Don't Be Scared. Rescued from vinyl oblivion, Bachman's remastering job really shines on this second effort.

A real find in this collection is the Canadian garage band classic It's Time. This amazing third chapter from this superstar band also introduced the world to the great voice of Burton Cummings. Along with founders Randy Bachman on guitar, the ever talented Jim Kale on bass and jazz rock drum style of Gary Peterson, these four gentlemen delivered some of the finest tunes ever with tracks like One Day, the bluesy Clock On The Wall and the chain gang rock of Seven Long Days. Never released on vinyl in the States, this newly remastered version should make a lot of Guess Who fans rejoice.

Shakin' All Over/Hey Ho (What You Do To Me)/It's Time were three definitive rocking chapters in the legendary career of The Guess Who. These recordings reveal a snapshot in Canadian musical history, never to be repeated again by anyone, but to be emulated by many. Their music is played on every classic rock and oldies station in the world, and fortunately for all of us, they continue to thrill crowds with their shopping list of number ones from multi-platinum albums recorded over the years.
